Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)

  • Why uses CAEL?

The CAEL Assessment is valuable to us in the intensive ESL program because it allows us to “teach to the test”. All four skills are tested and everything the student learns is of value. It tests language use in a practical way and in an academic context.

  • How to Prepare?

The Written Test is available in a number of versions all of which are typical of academic topics common to first year studies.

  • Score Report

The CAEL Assessment Score Report provides a profile of English proficiency in the four skills of academic listening, reading, writing and speaking and the test results are valid for two years.

About Us

The CAEL Assessment was first developed in 1987 by teachers and expert language testers at the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at CARLETON UNIVERSITY- OTTAWA, CANADA in response to requests from the faculty and a motion of the University Senate to provide an alternative to other standardized tests. The CAEL assessment was designed to more effectively identify students who could participate actively in academic study.
